RANDA SAYED
"If you are looking for something conservative - you are in the wrong place..."
Hi there,
My name name is Randa...
I am a writer, actor, mentor and cultural entrepreneur from Western Sydney.
As an artist, I am very passionate about creating inclusive and nuanced cultural stories that are entertaining vehicles for social change. I'm an avid collaborator, I push form and create bilingual work.
My debut play, Experience and The Girl took several years to create. Shortlisted for the Phillip Parsons Playwriting award and the West Australian Arts Editor Award, the play received five star ratings at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2016.
I was later awarded a place in the 2017 Belvoir Artist program and the Joan Sutherland Arts Centre's Breakthrough Artist Award to assist in the creation of my second play - The Woman.
On screen, I collaborated both as a writer and lead actress on the highly acclaimed web series Halal Gurls, Create NSW, ABC, In Between Pictures. I have created several short films including Dead Boy, Sigur Ros Mystery Film Competition and The Parisian, Flickerfest.
My published works include: Private Research, The Voices Project 2013 – Currency Press and On Western Sydney, Westside New Series.
A Western Sydney girl through and through - I was nominated for the Bankstown Local Woman of the Year in 2018. I first studied performance at Theatre Nepean, University of Western Sydney from 2005 - 2008 (just before the school was shut down to become a basketball court). I have been actively supporting Western Sydney artists and it's organisations as an entrepreneur ever since.
I love physical theatre and it's universal language. I have trained at schools such as Zen Zen Zo, Jacques Lecoq School of Movement and Theatre and the Ecole Phillipe Gaulier in Paris. I try to blend it into everything I do. I was able to achieve this level of training with the very generous support of the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and Create NSW.
As an actress and writer, I have worked with companies such as Bell Shakespeare, ABC, Foxtel, Matchbox Pictures, Sydney Theatre Company, Griffin Theatre, La Boîte Theatre Company, National Theatre Of Parramatta, Monkey Baa Theatre Company, The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Sport for Jove & Information Cultural Exchange to name a few.
I am currently developing my third and fourth play as part of my CreateNSW Creative Development Fellowship.
***Note - I have previously traded under the pseudonym 'Aanisa Vylet'
“A BEYONCE WANNABE, THE ENERGETIC AND FRENETIC UNNAMED GIRL IS CAPTIVATING THROUGHOUT AND PROBABLY DOES MORE FOR CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING IN 60 MINUTES THAN GOVERNMENT OR COMMUNITY LEADERS MIGHT ACHIEVE IN A LIFETIME."
